Cultural x Collabs: Weaving the Future

Fragment No. 10

100 Fragment Journeys

This fragment is part of the "CulturalxCollabs - Weaving the Future" carpet.

Through the fragment we trace the journey of the fragment owners and their collabs as they explore, experiment and creatively advance socially relevant themes. Here is the fragment as we are sending it on this three and a half-year journey.

Follow this story to observe the transformations the fragment undergoes over the course of these years...

...and on we go...

...with Cella Bianca Zavolan

I was inspired by this season of autumn - reflecting into the colours of the carpet piece. The different patterns and nuances that find their source of creation in nature herself. The magic carpet piece traveled through the forest of Bavaria..

I decided to play with the temporary, not to get too attached, the journey always continues.

Like the sky at dusk, where indigo embraces gold, or the ocean meeting the shore in an eternal dance, cultures blend—not to erase their essence but to illuminate one another. Each tradition is a color, distinct yet enriched by contrast, deepened by reflection. Just as nature weaves light and shadow into harmony, so too does humanity weave its stories, histories, and dreams into a living mosaic of connection.

To honor cultural diversity is to honor the very essence of creation itself: the infinite interplay of hues, the weaving of the past into the fabric of the future. And in every stitch, every journey, every collaboration, we reaffirm a simple truth—together, we are art in motion. Nothing exists in isolation—culture, like nature, thrives on exchange, on movement, on the quiet symphony of difference.

The journey begins...

Gamifying with fragment No. 10

In the intricate fabric of human society, cultural collaboration acts as the colorful thread that binds us together, creating a harmonious blend of diversity and unity. I believe it's crucial to introduce children to the richness of cultural collaboration from a young age. It's like giving them a precious gift of wisdom and empathy, guiding them on a journey where each discovery unveils new worlds and traditions to explore and cherish. Understanding that fundamental life lessons should be imparted early, and recognizing the power of games as educational tools, I've chosen to incorporate gamification into my carpet fragment project. By creating a character inspired by fragment number 10, I aim to provide both children and adults with an engaging way to delve into the vibrant tapestry of cultural diversity.

Although still in its early stages, I eagerly anticipate the realization of this game, believing it will be a valuable tool for fostering understanding and appreciation for diversity from a young age.

About the Project

The Museum for Islamic Art's project, #CulturalxCollabs - Weaving the future, celebrates the transformative power of cultural exchange and the shared threads that unite us all. All the things we love, have loved and will ever love come from cultural exchange, migration and diversity, or as we like to call it #CulturalxCollabs.

100 carpet fragments, cut from a replica of the iconic dragon carpet, will travel the world (delivered by DHL). The fragments will ignite #CulturalxCollabs with co-creators, inspiring human ingenuity, fostering community and ultimately demonstrating how cultural exchange enriches all our lives.

Where is the Dragon?

The star of the "CulturalxCollabs - Weaving the Future" project is a so-called Caucasian dragon carpet from the 17th century. A dragon carpet - all well and good - but: where is the dragon?
