What are songs from a foreign land? Where is this foreignness? And who is a foreigner here? "Gurbet Şarkıları" means "songs from foreign lands" in English and has become a term for music by people of Turkish origin from the first generation of immigrants, which they created in Germany and which was and is heard in Germany. The foreign country, that was Germany, from the perspective of the first guest workers.
How is music intertwined with the life stories of the first generation of guest workers, what changed in their children and grandchildren? Who were and are the stars of the Turkish-language music scene in Germany? What do they sing about, how do they express their feelings and emotions musically?
The first guest workers from Turkey come to Germany and a longing journey begins.
The dilemma of being caught between two supposedly opposing cultural identities becomes more and more the subject of Gurbet Şarkıları (Songs from a foreign land) in the 80s.
The preoccupation with one's own identity is becoming increasingly important in many migrant biographies and is reflected in many songs. At the same time, it can be observed that the musicians increasingly choose the German language to express their thoughts and feelings.
