Madrid, 2024
I received this fragment 169 days ago and have not yet contributed because I was too tired.
This fragment has witnessed 1 move and the sharing of food at many tables, of people who have left and others who have returned. Of reading 11 books and transplanting at least 12 plants. Of a change of job and finishing some studies. It has witnessed many washing machines and trips, kisses and affection. Of tidying and decluttering my wardrobe. Of moving furniture around and many trips. But, above all, it has witnessed my exhaustion.
The culturalxcollabs have coexisted in my head with many projects, with ideas and thoughts that have materialised or will materialise in the coming months. Mainly, they have coexisted with a project about the rest that is so necessary and about how to revolutionise it: together, living together, building and creating accessible spaces in the art institution. They have also coexisted with another project whose common thread is textile art in Spain and about which this fragment of carpet would surely have a lot to say. This project, which will be formalised through an exhibition in which artists from different generations share their work, exploring the resonances of the textile tradition in contemporary art.
The cultural exchange that this carpet fragment incited, far from all my initial ideas, has accompanied me for many months, has been in my mind and has been part of my days, my routine and my everyday life. Of my lack of sleep and my tiredness. It has witnessed months of exhaustion, hard work and many changes.
My contribution to culturalxcollabs is not all it could have been, but it is honest. It is honest with me and with my times. Without materialising through a grand gesture, this collaboration is symbolic and testimonial, I have lived with the carpet fragment and I have thought about it a lot. Maybe not now, but I know that in a few years it will return to my life and that, suddenly, its presence these months will make sense and be a driving force, it will activate something and create something new, which is, after all, what an exchange has to result in.
The Museum for Islamic Art's project, #CulturalxCollabs - Weaving the future, celebrates the transformative power of cultural exchange and the shared threads that unite us all. All the things we love, have loved and will ever love come from cultural exchange, migration and diversity, or as we like to call it #CulturalxCollabs.
100 carpet fragments, cut from a replica of the iconic dragon carpet, will travel the world (delivered by DHL). The fragments will ignite #CulturalxCollabs with co-creators, inspiring human ingenuity, fostering community and ultimately demonstrating how cultural exchange enriches all our lives.

The star of the "CulturalxCollabs - Weaving the Future" project is a so-called Caucasian dragon carpet from the 17th century. A dragon carpet - all well and good - but: where is the dragon?
