The photo was taken at the bus station in Fatih-Beyazıt: minibuses still connect the surrounding towns, whilst mobile sandwich sellers make use of the bustling square for their trade. Beyazıt is not only an important commercial hub, but also the centre of student life in Istanbul.
“The men are selling ‘kumru’ – open-faced sandwiches – and the young man in the background is offering liquorice juice (‘meyan’) in a ‘güğüm’.” (Firdes Scheyda)
“This could be anywhere – in Latin America, Berlin, Turkey. Simply living in the moment, connecting with other people and feeling love and peace.” (Lucie Nour/Czech Republic)
A cargo ship (presumably an oil tanker) is passing through the Bosphorus. The photo was taken from the viewpoint at Rumeli Fortress. In the foreground, Mrs Glitz is admiring the impressive scene.
A freight train is travelling along a railway embankment from Bingöl to Van; here it is passing through the deserted landscape near Tatvan, with only a flock of sheep grazing in the foreground. Puddles bear witness to recent rain; the photo was probably taken in the spring.
Kurdish nomads (Koçer) on their migration through the Tatvan region, June 1983. The children sit on the horses amidst their household belongings, whilst the foals run freely alongside.
A cart pulled by water buffaloes, fitted with traditional wooden disc wheels – laden with bulging sacks. Disc wheels are arguably more robust than spoked wheels when transporting heavy loads along unpaved, bumpy tracks.
The circumstances in which this photograph was taken are unclear. It is possible that the minibus was crossing a ford whilst the passengers continued on foot – in the background, perhaps near Kemer west of Antalya, the Taurus Mountains can be glimpsed.
“A puzzling image. Have the two women just got off? Why are they running? Only the driver remains seated in the bus, which is loaded with suitcases and trunks. The bus is stuck in the mud. Ümit – Hope” (anonymous)
Ferries crossing the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn are a common sight in Istanbul. At the Karaköy pier, passengers wait for the crossing – in the background, the Süleymaniye Mosque rises above the Eminönü district.

Turkey through open eyes: between the 1920s and the 2000s, three German photographers left behind an extraordinary collection of photographs – and people in Berlin share the memories these photos still evoke today.
